INCI: sodium pyrrolidone carboxylic acid
Sodium PCA is a sodium salt of pyroglutamic (pyrrolidone carboxylic) acid (PCA), which is an uncommon amino acid found naturally in many proteins in skin.
Concentration: 50% (dissolved in water).
GMO-free, gluten-free.
Occurs naturally in human skin and is responsible for binding moisture to the cells.
Highly water-absorbent, holding several time its weight in water, which makes it an excellent humectant.
Well-know as skin-penetration enhancer.
- Humectant Properties: Sodium PCA attracts and binds water from the environment, drawing moisture into the skin and helping it stay hydrated. It it helps the skin retain moisture, leading to a softer, more supple appearance. Stronger hydrating agent than the traditional compounds like glycerin or propylene glycol.
- Naturally Occurring: It’s a component of the skin’s natural moisturizing factor (NMF), meaning it’s already present in healthy skin.
- Derived from Amino Acids: Sodium PCA is derived from amino acids and is often found in plant and animal tissue.
- Safe and Non-Irritating: It’s generally considered safe and non-irritating for use in skincare products, with concentrations typically ranging from 0.2-4%.
- Sensitive to Light and Heat: Products containing Sodium PCA should be packaged in opaque and light-resistant containers because it is sensitive to light and heat.
- Hydration Without Occlusion: Unlike some moisturizers that can feel heavy, Sodium PCA provides hydration without making the skin feel greasy or clogged.
- Uses in Skincare: It’s a staple ingredient in many moisturizers, serums, and other skincare products, as well as in some haircare products.
- Static electricity in Hair health: Good for hair care as it reduces static electricity.
- Benefits: Regular use can help improve skin elasticity, making it appear smoother and softer. It can also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
