INCI: Silybum marianum hydroglycerin seed extract
Thistle grows on the rocky soils of southern and western Europe and parts of the United States.
The active constituents of milk thistle seeds are three isomeric flavonolignans, namely silibinin (silybin), silychristin, and silidianin, collectively known as silymarin. Silymarin displays antioxidant and membrane stabilizing activity. It protects various tissues and organs against chemical injury, and shows potential as an antihepatoxic agent. Provides antioxidant and stabilizing action of membranes. It protects the various tissues and organs from chemical injuries and has potential as an anti-hepatoxic agent.
Silymarin is the most well-known strong protective substance for the liver. Its action competes with liver toxins. It is a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent the depletion of glutathione in liver cells. Glutathione is responsible for detoxification from a wide range of drugs, chemicals and hormones.
Milk Thistle flavonoids are effective in neutralizing excess peroxides, thus reducing the cell damage caused by them. Milk Thistle can help protect breast tissue from the destructive properties of free radicals, aiding milk production in breastfeeding mothers. It is used to improve digestion, as it promotes the flow of bile from the liver, which then breaks down fats from food. In addition, silymarin helps prevent or treat gallstones, as it has the property of increasing the bile solubility. Silymarin suppresses the action of certain inflammatory enzymes. As a result, Milk Thistle is used as an adjunct therapy for inflammatory diseases of the liver, such as cirrhosis and hepatitis.
Used in cases of hepatitis, cirrhosis, jaundice and degeneration of the liver by fatty infiltration.
Silymarin is preferred for the treatment of psoriasis because of its ability to suppress leukotriene synthesis (leukotrienes have the ability to cause inflammation) and to improve liver function by protecting the liver from toxins. Research has shown that the antioxidant potential of Milk thistle promotes the regeneration of liver cells and minimizes their damage from overdose.
Milk thistle that helps prevent oil oxidation and provides antioxidant protection against free radicals. What makes silymarin so beneficial is its universal ability to address and correct a number of skin conditions. Silymarin’s high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help it reduce solar UV radiation-induced inflammation and oxidative stress, which contribute to signs of photoaging and certain skin cancers, including melanoma. Its anti-inflammatory properties, which can be great for calming breakouts. The anti-inflammatory properties also make it an ideal ingredient to help heal the skin.
Great for oily or acne-prone skin → Studies using silymarin in skin care show a reduction in oiliness, refined skin texture, and an improvement in skin clarity, fine lines and overall appearance.
It can improve hyperpigmentation and size of melasma. A 2018 study found that silymarin helped prevent melanin production without affecting skin cells, unlike hydroquinone. This means that skin gets the same benefits without the negative side effects.
