BHT is a lipophilic lab-made chemical organic compound, a derivative of phenol, that is useful for its antioxidant properties. It is widely used to prevent free radical-mediated oxidation in fluids.
It is used as preservative in foods, animal feed, animal and vegetable oil, petroleum products, rubber and plastics. BHT is also used in a wide range of cosmetic formulations as an antioxidant at concentrations from 0.0002% to 0.5%.
People also use it as medicine. It is used to treat genital herpes and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Some people apply BHT directly to the skin for cold sores.
